Metal Clay for Metalsmiths - Kate McKinnon
Friday, July 9th, 2010 - 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

About the workshop

This workshop is one day intensive introduction to Metal Clay as an alloyed skin material, suitable for covering a variety of other metals with a sculptural or textural layer of pure fine silver.

We will use fine silver MC to form a sculptural skin on sterling silver tubing and two plain discs, and create sculptural tips on fine silver and sterling silver wire, creating custom headpins, S-hooks, and a stunning cocktail ring of your own design. These are applications that can be used at any traditional bench to ornament boxes, forms, or wires of any kind, and these techniques can be adapted for fine silver inlay in any other metal, with or without texture. This is a fantastic class for an entirely new look at the true metalsmithing potential of fine silver metal clay.

Who should attend

Students, teachers, jewelry makers, suppliers, & hobbyists of all skill levels.

Fee

The cost to attend the 1 day workshop is $150.00, plus $40 required materials (1 troy ounce of fresh fine silver PMC3, several inches of sterling tube, two discs, and an assortment of sterling and fine silver wire. The materials fee reflects only the wholesale cost of supplies, so please let Kate provide them for you to make sure we have exactly what we need.)

Metal Clay for Metalsmiths - Kate McKinnon

Saturday, July 10th & 11th, 2010 - 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

About the workshop

A two day intensive introduction to Metal Clay as a structural material, exploring when to use it alone, when to use it only as a skin over an armature of traditionally crafted metal forms, and how to combine the two for best success. There will be lots of demos, and time for finishing (polishing, forging, patina) on Day 2. We will explore:

Box forms. We will cover both skinning traditionally cut and soldered boxes, and those formed of pure fine silver MC. If you didn’t realize that MC can be used successfully as a structural material, you might be surprised. We will create a box form, either a circle box or a building, and explore the ideas behind making it as strong as one that has been cut from sheet and soldered. If you prefer to skin a box form made at the bench, bring the finished form with you to class, and be sure to note what temperature your softest solder will flow at, so we know at what temp to fire your skin. (If you make your own box at your bench and bring it to class ready to skin, you can get by with one troy ounce of MC for class.)

Imbedded post settings. We will make a Rivet Post Ring with a fine silver post, set stainless steel or sterling silver pin backs, and create one-piece sculptural earrings by adding MC elements to niobium or sterling silver wire.

Forging. Like any soft metal, fine silver benefits not only from work hardening, but from forging. We will make sculptural toggle bars from fine silver MC, focusing on techniques that enhance density, and after firing, we will forge them.

Sculpture. We’ll form an armature (I’ll suggest a branch, but other forms are fine) of the wire of your choice (I’ll suggest fine silver or sterling) and cover it with fine silver metal clay.

Who should attend

Students, teachers, jewelry makers, suppliers, & hobbyists of all skill levels.

Fee

$400 for two days, plus required materials fee of $100, or, if you make and bring your own box form, $65. The materials fee reflects only the wholesale cost of supplies, so please let Kate provide them for you to make sure we have exactly what we need.

Playing With Pewter: A 2 Day Workshop ~ Lisa Slovis Mandel

Time: July 17, 2010 at 9am to July 18, 2010 at 5pm
Location: Whaley Studios
Street:
3848 5th Ave, Suite A
City/Town:
San Diego, CA 92103
Phone:
877. 594.2539

Pewter, made up of antimony, copper, and tin is one of the most mysterious of the non-ferrous metals. Due to it's very low melting temperature and high malleability it can be moved faster and in different ways than other metals. Because of it's uniqueness, it is taught much less frequently in our metalsmithing community.

In this workshop, you will learn how to use pewter's uniqueness to your advantage. You will form a beautiful contemporary pewter vase using forming, fusing, soldering, and finishing techniques. For this particular project, we will not use hammers, or stakes or a press, we will form with almost no forming at all, but rather by using the easy malleability and wonders of fusing to create a unique shape.

Along with the vase, we will add in some other smaller projects including quick castings and a utensil. Students will create as many things as their time permits, but all will create several finished pieces.

This two day workshop will include a power point buy Lisa, and lots of hands on instruction. The materials fee per student is about $50.

This is a fun, fast paced workshop that allows the student to make an impressive piece in a short amount of time.

Cost 350.00 including Materials Fee

Lay away plan available via check only, $150.00 due at sign up, balance in 2 payments of $100, to be paid in full prior to start of workshop.
